Lake Louise is one of Canada’s largest ski resorts, set amid the breath-taking scenery of Banff National Park. The ski resort is near to the charming mountain town of Banff. First made popular by the opening of the Canadian Pacific line in the 1880s. Today, the town is peppered with hotels, bars and restaurants, giving the skier just as much to see and do after the sun has dipped below the snowy peaks. We’ve put together some of our favourite Banff après ski and nightlife spots to head to once the lifts shut.
The Banff Ave. Brewing Company
Start the night at Banff’s first brew pub, famous for its premium in-house craft beers. Only the best quality hops and malts with the company’s own cultured yeast strains are used, but there is also a fourth special ingredient: pure, mineral-laden glacial water from the Canadian Rockies. For a bit of a change, this Banff après ski spot also features an extensive wine list and a good choice of cocktails.
Magpie & Stump
Magpie & Stump brings a little slice of Mexico to chilly Canadian evenings. This is the perfect place to relax after a long day skiing, with its eccentric décor and friendly atmosphere. You’ll find a tempting array of authentic delicacies on offer. From quesadillas and burritos to tacos and chilli rellenos. For après ski drinks, there is a wide choice of beer, wines and also cocktails, that will see you through to closing time. The Bulldog – a margarita with an upside-down Corona in it – is particularly popular among regulars.
Melissa’s Missteak
This steakhouse is the place to head when you’re in need of some hearty post-slope sustenance. Everything on the menu is entirely made from scratch. Try the famous succulent steaks and the selection of delicious desserts. Located in an original homestead dating back to 1913, this is the perfect choice from Banff’s après ski stops for traditional Canadian hospitality.
The Bear Street Tavern
This is one of the best Banff après ski spots. If you’re looking for a good pizza, this sophisticated take on a traditional tavern is certainly the place to go. From a classic margherita to more unusual takes on the Italian staple, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Try a pizza with a smoked bison topping or honey and chilli dipping sauce. Larger groups of 10 or more might want to try the $20 pizza party menu too.
Grizzly House
Grizzly House started its life almost 50 years ago as Western Canada’s first disco. This quirky establishment is the place to go for a fondue. Its 14 different hot rock and oil fondues range from Canadian specialities such as buffalo and wild boar to the more adventurous offerings of ostrich or shark.
The Elk and Oarsman
If you can tear yourself away from the roof terrace’s 360° mountain panoramas, the Elk and Oarsman’s menus cater for individuals and groups of up to 200 people. The late-night menu offers everything from pizza to poutine, complemented by a wide selection of vegetarian and gluten-free options.
