Choosing the right ski resort during the season can be a good predicament to be in, with so many choices during the winter months. Now you’ve decided that Canada takes your fancy, why not explore what month and what ski region is best suited to you?
Skiing in Canada in December
Skiing anywhere during the festive months adds that extra sparkle to your winter holiday. A winter holiday and Christmas celebrations, what’s not to like? Enjoy the festivities in the magical setting of one of the smaller Canadian ski resorts, like Fernie or SilverStar. There’s nothing quite like experiencing a white Christmas. Especially if those in charge of the cooking are let off for the year!
Stay At:
Sitting in the mountains, Hotel Lizard Creek Lodge in Fernie is close to the resort with ski-in ski-out access.
Make the most of your ski trip by waking up and getting the first lifts. There’s also the chance you’ll spot Santa on the slopes. Experiencing Canada during the magical month of December is likely to guarantee a family ski holiday to remember.
Stay At:
The ski-in ski-out Snowbird Lodge is located at the slopeside end of the Village, with spectacular views of the Monashee Mountains and the front side of SilverStar ski area.
Skiing in Canada in January
January is the month you want to visit Canada if you are a true powder hound. This month is infamous for its relentless dumping of champagne powder across all North American ski resorts. It is generally one of the quieter times to go skiing, with the school holidays over it is the perfect time to visit if you aren’t restricted by term time.
Don’t forget to take extra layers as the temperature can drop way below zero. Despite this, we can assure you it is worth it for the quiet lifts and slopes. Most ski resorts will be in full flow by January with plenty of snow coverage, so most of the slopes will be ready to be carved.
We recommend visiting the Kicking Horse ski resort if you are looking to explore the ultimate off-piste terrain. It is a regular on the Freeride World Tour and has some of the most challenging off-piste in North America.
Stay At:
Copper Horse Lodge is a luxury boutique lodge in Kicking Horse, superbly located for the Golden Eagle Express gondola.
Skiing in Canada in February
If you are visiting a ski resort in February you will truly see it come alive. Across the world, February is one of the busiest times to go skiing and one of the best. Skiing during a peak week in Canada will show you the fantastic alpine atmosphere it has to offer. The weather is likely to be warmer than the previous months and a great base layer of snow. A win-win.
Travelling further afield during the busy ski month of February has its benefits. As many Canadian schools have a different term time to that of schools in Britain, it can be a great choice for a family trip.
We recommend visiting one of the larger, more popular resorts like Banff during the month of February. You are more likely to find fun winter events hosted by the ski resort during this period. Plus, the town of Banff is located in Alberta, with the ‘Big 3‘ ski resorts on your doorstep. There will be plenty to do across Sunshine Village, Mt. Norquay, and Lake Louise to make the most of your trip.
Stay At:
Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel is perfect for ski and snowboarding holidays in the beautiful town of Banff.
Skiing in Canada in March
March is one of the best times to go skiing in Canada. The days become longer and the weather becomes warmer. Though, it is still cold enough to get some great skiing in. Plus if you book early, you can get some fantastic deals too. The snowfall in March is usually regarded as some of the best Canada receives in the whole winter season. The base layer combined with the huge snowfall dumping is enough of a reason for you to make the journey.
Bluebird days and powder days go hand in hand in March, a skier’s dream. Because of this, we think you should visit Whistler during this month. It is one of the most famous ski resorts in Canada and one of the biggest. You will have over 200km of pistes to explore. There is fantastic freeride terrain and powder bowls to drop into. If you’re a beginner why not hire a guide for the day and get your adrenaline racing?
Stay At:
The Summit Lodge Boutique Hotel offers 81 spacious suites complete with kitchenettes, fireplaces and balconies in every suite.
Skiing in Canada in April
Personally, I think April is the best time to go skiing in Canada. The sun is shining and bluebird days are becoming more common. If you travel up to a high ski resort you can still benefit from a sunny powder day. This is a great opportunity for an end-of-season trip, or perhaps a family holiday during the Easter half-term.
The good thing about skiing in Canada in April is that most of the ski resorts have an extended season. So the majority of lifts and runs will be open for visitors (bar obvious avalanche/weather warnings!).
A great ski resort to visit in April would be Jasper. Jasper is Canada’s most northern ski resort, located in Alberta. Set amongst dense forests and its own National Park, Jasper is perched at an impressive 2,612m. It is a picturesque ski town oozing true Canadian charm. Visitors have over 100km worth of slopes to get stuck into and plenty to do off the slope too. Non-skiers can marvel at the spectacular scenery, ice skate on frozen lakes (in true Canadian style), and sample the fantastic local cuisine.

Set in 1000 acres of National Park, the Hotel Jasper Park Lodge is one of the finest properties in the Canadian Rockies.
