The thrill of going to a ski resort frequented by the stars is not just about the excitement of sitting next to a well-known face on the lift (although that’s a definite perk). When celebrities hit the slopes, they do it in style. Follow in their footsteps and visit their favourite spots. Take advantage of impeccable service, luxurious amenities and – most importantly – top-tier skiing. We take a look at five destinations that the rich and famous make a beeline for when the snow starts to fall. Read on for our top celebrity ski resorts.
Verbier, Switzerland
Verbier is Switzerland’s top destination for celebrity spotting. It’s also one of the best resorts for après ski. Legendary drinking den Farm Club has been the place to be for over 40 years – both David Bowie and Diana Ross partied here. Madonna and her family also dropped by for the festive season, as well as magician David Blaine. British songwriter James Blunt is another fan – he’s also co-owner of local restaurant La Vache.
Courmayeur, Italy
Courmayeur sits at the foot of Europe’s highest mountain, Mont Blanc. This medieval market town has charming, winding alleyways that are perfect for hiding from the paparazzi. Many of the ski resort’s breath-taking pistes are above 2,500 metres, and have runs to suit all levels. Chef Heston Blumenthal was (unsurprisingly) enchanted by the Aosta Valley’s rustic food and amazing wines. Follow in his footsteps and pop into mountainside restaurant Chiecco, where you can sample delicious local fare like wild boar ragù with polenta.
Whistler, Canada
North America’s largest ski area, Whistler ski resort, is a playground that’s known for its award-winning restaurants, legendary nightlife and excellent powder. There’s something for every level here. Whether you’re cutting your teeth on the nursery slopes with the younger members of the Beckham clan, or showing off your moves like Tom Cruise. When it’s time for après-ski, head to The GLC lounge bar for live music, poutine and incredible views of the nearby cliff drops.
Vail, Colorado
With more than 5,000 skiable acres and an abundance of five-star spas and restaurants, it’s no wonder the rich and famous flock to Vail ski resort. Formula 1 superstar Lewis Hamilton celebrated the 2017 New Year (and his 32nd birthday) here. While Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris had fun making snowmen during the 2015–16 holiday season. While you’re whizzing down the immaculate groomed slopes, you might even find yourself trying to keep up with the Kardashians. The well-known family have been visiting since Kim was a child. If you are looking for celebrity ski resorts in the USA, this is the place to be.
Courchevel, France
Located in Les Trois Vallées area, Courchevel ski resort is split into four villages. Each one is named for its altitude in metres. From Courchevel 1300 to the highest (and most exclusive) Courchevel 1850. The latter is where you’re likely to spot A-listers like Prince William and George Clooney. Following a day on the slopes, join the likes of DJ David Guetta and singer Taio Cruz for signature cocktails at L’Apogée Courchevel. Alternatively, head to one of the resort’s 12 Michelin-star restaurants for a superb meal.
