In the heart of the Italian Dolomites, this charming ski resort should definitely be on your radar. The snow conditions were sublime and staying at Hotellerie De Mascognaz made for a really special experience. Here are some of my recommendations for skiing in Champoluc.
Champoluc is an attractive Italian ski resort with traditional architecture and a pretty church. We skied over to neighbouring Gressoney-La-Trinité and enjoyed cruisy, long red and blue runs through the trees. In Gressoney we popped into the authentic Chalet du Lys for a drink. This is lovely 4* hotel with an après bar and a great spa, and its close to the lifts.
Where to stay?
Hotellerie De Mascognaz is a beautiful collection of renovated 13th century farm buildings on the mountainside above Champoluc. Like a small village, the hotel describes itself as a puzzle. The spectacular location, charm of the old restored buildings and artworks throughout the hotel makes staying here really special. Access to the hotel is by skidoo from the hotel’s car park, which is a five-minute drive from the centre of Champoluc. In addition, 4×4’s are also on hand to take you around town.
My room was cosy and cute with wooden panels, floral details and lots of nooks and crannies. Rooms vary in size with some boasting panoramic double windows and a lounge area with log burner. The Walser Suite is spectacular and rather quirky. Made up of three bedrooms, lots of lovely rustic character features, it retains a luxurious feel. There is a lovely pool with mountain views, a sauna and steam room that is a short walk from the main building.
Where to dine?
I had breakfast and dined twice at Hotellerie de Mascognaz during our stay on the mountain. There were delicious aperitivo snacks of arancini balls, cheeses and cold meats before dinner. I was certainly impressed with how delicious the pasta courses were and there was a good selection of wines.
There are plenty of mountain restaurants dotted throughout the resort, all reasonably and similarly priced. There is a great après bar on the way back down into Champoluc about 150m above the resort called Bruno’s, run by a really lovely guy. The cosy bar has a sun terrace, and meanwhile après tunes are blasted out onto the piste. I imagine the bar is great fun on a busy sunny day.
My highlights
The skidoo up to Mascognaz is a wonderful experience and the views from the hotel are spectacular. Similarly, waking up on the mountain and watching the sunrise reflecting off the mountains was glorious. I loved Champoluc and I thought the ski area and general atmosphere was great. As its only an hour and a half from Turin, it’s great for a short break.
Stay At:
A stunning hotel development tucked away in the heart of the mountains high above the resort of Champoluc. Accessible by skidoo, you’re hidden away where the outside world seems an age away.
