Our Managing Director shares with us his recent ski trip with his partner Annika to beautiful Andermatt in Switzerland.
Where did you stay?
I was staying at The Chedi Andermatt, a five-star development owned by the Asian hotel chain, GHM. The hotel has proved to be a firm favourite of Ski Solutions clients. This is not your average Alpine hotel. It brought to mind some of the Six Senses hotels I have been to in South-East Asia. Perhaps it was the sense of space. The Chedi Andermatt has been built on a grand scale, with no expenses spared. The bedroom basics were executed brilliantly. Rainforest shower, blackout blinds controlled by your in-room iPad, and one of the comfiest super-king beds I’ve found. The little extras were clever and well thought out, like the digital thermometer by the door which displayed the temperature outside so you knew whether you needed an extra layer that morning.
As you might expect, the hotel boasts a stunning spa. With 35m indoor swimming pool and a fabulous hydrotherapy area. Rather than tucking the swimming pool away in an airless basement, as is sometimes the way in the Alps, The Chedi has integrated the pool into the heart of the hotel, with floor-to-ceiling windows allowing you to swim lengths whilst watching the snowfall outside. Moreover, There are two restaurants (Swiss/International and Japanese) – both excellent.
In addition, don’t miss the ‘Cheese Room’ – a towering glass centerpiece in the restaurant stacked full of fabulous Fromage, and be sure to get up for breakfast. It’s one of the best spreads I’ve found in the Alps.
What’s Andermatt ski resort like?
Andermatt is located at the foot of the Gotthard mountains at an altitude of 1444m. A convenient 90-minute drive from Zurich. As with most ski resorts in Switzerland, you can also take the train. This option couldn’t be more convenient with the station directly adjacent to the front door of The Chedi Andermatt.
In addition, formally a base for the Swiss army, the ski resort is undergoing something of a transformation with a multitude of hotel developments and infrastructure improvements. The Andermatt-Sedrun Ski Arena. Offers 120km of slopes linked by train. The Chedi Andermatt couldn’t make it easier for you to ski it, with an on-demand driver service to whizz you to the base of the nearby slopes, and a friendly member of staff to help you with your skis and boots.
In addition, Andermatt is a stunning destination for a weekend or longer. The Swiss bankers haven’t made it easy for us Brits to ski here. It cannot be denied that this is not a destination for those on a tight budget. The Swiss are the leading innovators right now in the luxury Alpine hotel space. If you are looking to experience the very best, The Chedi Andermatt is well worth a visit.
